  • Wilson Auditorium 2471 East Walnut Street Pasadena, CA, 91107 United States (map)

NAMI SGV Distinguished Speaker Series

Featuring: Randy Shrewsberry, Executive Director and Cofounder of The Institute for Criminal Justice Training Reform

Randy will share his personal and family experiences with mental illness along with his professional background in law enforcement. He will discuss how both facets influenced his life and inspired his career change from 30 years in the private sector to founding a national nonprofit for criminal justice training reform in 2017.  Randy will explore the intersection of mental health and policing and discuss what is learned in basic training in contrast to the experiences police actually have with people in a mental health crisis, and the sometimes tragic situations that occur. The mental health of police officers and police PTSD will also be discussed. He will conclude with examples of current training reform models that have created better police responses and share a variety of positive steps everyone can take to encourage further progress.
